Blog 6: How were you feeling the first day of project? What were your initial expectations? What were your hopes and fears?
Coming
into this project at King’s Gym, I knew we would be working with a lot of
clients, and that made me nervous. I was scared that I wouldn't know what to
say or that the conversations would be awkward. But from the very first day, I
realized how friendly and welcoming everyone was. Every conversation felt
natural, and I never felt out of place. The clients and staff made me feel like
I was valued, like I truly belonged there.
One of my
main goals coming into this experience was to learn more about how different
workout routines can be tailored to fit specific people and lifestyles. I
didn’t just want to observe workouts, but I wanted to understand the reasoning
behind them. Our mentor, Ed helped guide us through this by giving us case
studies, which made us think critically. For example, we created workout plans
for someone recovering from heart surgery or someone who was obese and just
beginning their weight loss journey. Each case pushed us to consider safety,
effectiveness, and the unique needs of the person.
Through
this process, I learned how important it is to not only understand physical
fitness but also to understand people. Every client has a story, a goal, and a
different path, and our job was to meet them where they are and help them move
forward. This experience gave me more confidence, not just in my knowledge of
fitness, but also in how I communicate and connect with others. I truly valued
my time at Kings Gym. I came into this experience nervous and shy, but I left feeling
accomplished. Every day we were doing important work, through helping clients,
cleaning, and learning new workouts. I am excited to use my new fitness goals
in the future, especially in college. I won't have access to a trainer, so I’m
excited to use these skills to build my own workout regimen.
Vanessa, what a lovely post! I can tell that this expereince helped you grow in so many ways. At the same time, it's clear that you made an impact on the King's community. Congratulations!
