Blog 5: How have you grown from the beginning to the end of your project?

Over the past few days at our internship at King’s Gym, we’ve really gotten to experience just how close the community is. Every morning, we help our mentor train his clients, and many of them have started recognizing us. While they’re doing their reps, we get to have small conversations with them, and through those moments, we’ve learned so much more about who they are outside of the gym. These little interactions have shown me how simply being there, helping out, can make a real difference in someone’s day. We’ve heard from so many of the clients that they love having us around. They enjoy talking to us and seeing how we can support their workouts.

One way I’ve personally grown through this experience is my punctuality. While this might not seem like it directly connects to the goal of our project, it’s something that’s had a big impact on me. At first, I struggled with getting to the gym on time. But our mentor had a rule: if you’re late, you do twenty pushups. As much as I hated waking up early and doing those pushups, it taught me a lesson. I learned to stop sleeping past my alarm and to start preparing for the next day the night before. I even started prioritizing sleep and building a better schedule for myself.

Overall, this experience has helped me grow not just professionally, but personally too. Throughout the school year, and even outside of school, I’ve struggled a lot with being on time. I would set alarms to remind myself when I needed to leave the house, but I always seemed to get distracted or caught up doing other things. During my time at King’s Gym, I finally started to break that habit. I learned that the best way to stay on time is either to wake up earlier and give myself more time in the morning, or to simply avoid doing any extra tasks before I leave. Sticking to that mindset has really helped me build better habits, which I believe will help me in college.
