Blog 4: What has surprised you the most so far?
One of the highlights of today’s experience at King’s Gym was getting the chance to box. A few years ago, I used to box with my brothers here, so being back and trying that part of the gym was exciting. I’ve always loved boxing not just because it’s fun, but because it’s also a great workout, so I was ready to try it again today.
We started
the session by working on the punching bags, focusing on proper technique. Our
mentor reminded us to turn our wrists at the end of each punch to make sure we
were hitting correctly and safely. After getting comfortable with that, we
moved into the boxing ring for a new and challenging drill. We had to throw 10
punches at each corner of the ring, then shuffle to the next one, and repeat
for five minutes straight. I drank a lot of water before this drill, so next
time I will make sure not to do that, because halfway through the drill, I had
a cramp, but I made sure to keep pushing until the 5 minutes were up.
We also
trained with someone our mentor works with regularly. He was very encouraging,
which meant a lot since Lona, and I are still new to boxing. Getting into the
ring was a bit confusing at first, and after watching us awkwardly crawl
through the ropes, he showed us the proper way to enter. It was a small moment,
but it still made a difference in helping us feel more comfortable.
Knowing
that King’s Gym has been voted as having the best boxing classes in Cleveland
made me even more excited to be back in the ring. Today reminded me just how important
it is to try new things. I hadn’t boxed in years, but today I had so much fun getting
back in the ring and going again.

Vanessa, that's so cool that you boxed! What a way to challenge yourself to learn new things (or revisit old skills in this case) and stretch your physical limits!
